Julia Carroll is a fabulous costume jewelry historian and I have all three of her books, Collecting Costume Jewelry 101, 202 and 303. This first tome is mostly about IDing vintage composition of clasps, hooks, metals etc., but she does have a quick overview of many famous retro costume jewelry companies and some examples of their work. Her really best book is the 202, which has in depth descriptions of famous companies (especially Coro, Trifari and Boucher), including listing their patented gems and their names, which is helpful if you are a collector and want to ID your jewelry and what date it was made, also there are many photos of classic pieces, and vintage jewelry ads featuring collections from years past. I remove one star for the first book as it is just for beginners, the second I would give five stars to, and the third also four because it doesn't offer much that is new, though any Carroll book is an informative volume for your costume jewelry library
This book is amazing. It has great photographs and an excellent description of each company along with great advice for the beginning collector. This is a wonderful reference book. This book was printed in 2006, so if you are looking for updated costs and values, this book will not be of much help.
This is a fabulous book! A must read for the beginning collector and for anyone with a newfound passion for vintage costume jewelry. From A-Z is in this book. Not as much on some of the less mass produced makers but definitely quenched your thirst. I couldn't put this book down. I finished it in a couple days. Now on to 202 which at first glance does not seem as exciting as this one but I'm sure there is a need to know the info included there. Then on to 303. I bought all 3 books from the jump. The author knows her stuff and really gives an all encompassing review and tutorial. I was surprised to find thAt I had many of the pieces in this first book or at least a variation. Some of the prices seem low but I am comparing with what I find on eBay. I believe I have a natural eye for quality and luxe so I was pleased to have discovered some of my treasures were in this book. I also found the information and advice very very helpful Shen making my estate buys. I avoided some possibly costly mistakes thanks to the info in this book. Good buy without a doubt. Highly recommended.
I actually bought her 2nd book (202) before buying this one (101) and while I treasure my 202 guide much more than this first one (because I'm not a beginner) - I think it is a fabulous book to have for those starting out. With a lot of fake WEISS and other great designers' jewelry being reproduced and sold as the real thing today (especially on eBay), it's a good guide to have that shows a fair amount and variation of these favorite popular designers' pieces. This will help the beginner collector possibly know a fake when they see it. Not all that shines and sparkles means it is the real thing or that it's collectible. I believe both her books should be bought together but the 202 Guide is definitely the very best there is (because it shows so many patents). I particularly like the fact that both of these books are done in sturdy paperback because if they were hardbound, they would be so heavy given how big they are. Lots and lots of colorful pictures! Well done!!
Costume Jewelry 101, written by a teacher, is the instructive primer for costume jewelry collecting. It provides excellent background information on how to evaluate a piece, "when to buy and when to walk away." It recommends four designers for beginners. The book is organized alphabetically by designer with excellent photos for the pieces, a brief history of the company, mark, signature look, and recommendations. The concluding chapters (Marked by Style, helpful for identifying unmarked pieces; Upgrading Your Collection; Repairing and Cleaning Jewelry; Cataloging a Collection; and Storing and Insuring a Collection) also provide good background information. The prices given in this book are quite realistic because they are based on eBay averages, and the pieces are not all high end as in some books. The book has an index, which so many of these types of books lack. I own a couple other books and have checked out other books from the library on costume jewelry collecting, and this book by far is the best.
I read the reviews before I decided to purchase this book... and everyone was right! It is fantastic. You can obtain a wealth of knowledge about costume jewelry within a day or two. Julia C. Carroll leaves nothing out of this colorful, practical and FUN resource. Answers to questions will be right at your fingertips. It is like having your own personal guide as you scroll through eBay or prepare to go to the antique malls. If you or someone you know is new to collecting costume jewelry from the 40's, 50's, 60's and beyond, this is the book to get! I am already excited to order 202.
This is a great resource book for beginning and intermediate costume jewelry collecters. Excellent synopses of many of the great jewelry designers and manufacturers. Lists some of the identifying characteristics and values of some of the 1940's and 1950's designer jewelry that will help to classify unsigned pieces from this era. Beautiful photographs of a multitude of jewelry pieces from various designers. The only fault I found with this book is one that Mrs. Carroll states herself; there are few photos of very early costume jewelry pieces. She advises the readers to review older books on costume jewelry to get more complete information on early jewelry.
