I bought this book because last year I bought The Perfect Cookie from the same authors. I loved that cookbook so I figured this one would be as good - as it is. There are recipes for all kinds of cakes; coffee cakes, bundt cakes, chiffon cakes and fancy celebration cakes. The recipes have been tested and tested so you know they are going to work.I've tried a few so far - not as many as I'd like but I'm sure more will be forthcoming. They are easy to follow and well written. There are lots of photos which I just love in a cookbook.
This was a gift as my wife wanted to lean some of these recipes, and I must say the production values on this book are amazing. So was the first cake she made (the blueberry guy on the cover). It was fabulous - if all the recipes are like this, and with America's Test Kitchen they likely are, it's definitely a winner.
Amazing! I order the book on the 28th, it was shipped on the 29th and was delivered on the 30th! Opening the package, I was so excited - it felt like Christmas when I was a kid - headed for the grocery to buy banana's and pecan halves for banana cake this evening. An EXTREMELY well laid out book concerning the receipts, lists and numbered detailed instructions - a real plus if you have a high 'idiot quotient index' like I do. The book is big and the print is readable, with lots of technique photo's.. Well worth the price. None of the cakes seem overly difficult, but seem to be various twists on treats I've cooked or eaten in the past. I love these new adventures in cookbooks, especially those that have attainable goals..
This book has plenty of real-life recipes that aren't too fancy or difficult for the average baker. Most of the recipes use easy-to-find ingredients, and the instructions are simple to follow. Only downside for me personally is that several recipes use a food processor rather than a mixer, and (not being much of a cook) I gave away mine away several kitchen purges ago. That aside, this is an awesome book that I'd highly recommend. P.S. "The Perfect Cookie" is another worthwhile cookbook you may want to take a look at, too!
This is the best book of cakes since Rose Levy Birnbaum's the Cake Bible. Every recipe I have tried has turned out well. I especially liked the re-do of the poke cake, and the way that you can make a simply wonderful cake in a food processor in about 10 minutes. For those who like the speed of ready made mixes these are attainable and fairly easy, and for those of us who like a more natural and wholesome cake the recipes are just creative enough and beautiful as well.
I am a fan of Cook’s Illustrated and America’s Test Kitchen. What I like the most is the thorough explanation that is behind each recipe. Makes me even. More interested in cooking and baking.This book is beautiful. I sometimes even use it around the house as a coffee table book. The recipes are legit and all the photographs are stunning.Apart from recipes, there’s SO much more useful information, like conversions and equipment. This is really such a jewel! Love it and will buy more as gifts.
I love love love this book. One of the best touches is the cakes layers offered in the back of the book. They are in the book as well but they just kept them in one spot as a go too. I am so off and running with this book. I am going to do the cover cake this weekend 041418 and will post my review with am image. Love the book. Love the ladies on the show. What the real winner is for me is the cakes are tested time and time again. This speaks to me and I have tried and followed many America's test kitchen recipes. Good instruction and if you are a baker it all jives and makes sense. If not I still feel one could pull out a great dessert from this book. love it!!!!!
Scholarly readers will know that the headline is probably a misquote. Comfort yourselves with the wares from this book. America’s Test Kitchen has come through again. Highly detailed, much variety. My background in baking is limited so I found this direct and prescriptive approach useful.One small issue: sometimes hard to find recommended baking temp. I defaulted to 350 convection.
