From Publishers Weekly

For the Amish the world is divided into two types: unbelieving Englischers and von unsrer Sort Lut (``those of our kind''). And the greater the distance between the two, the better. Langin begins his enjoyable and accessible study by making it clear that he is a ``man of the world who has drifted into the company of the devout.'' That notwithstanding, he was made a welcome guest of the Allen County, Ind., Amish community, in part because Langin is well-versed in their 400-year Anabaptist history in Switzerland, Alsace and the Palatinate, in part because the Amish retain sentimental ties to the language and land of their forebears--and while Langin is an Englischer , he is a German Englischer . This book was intended for a German audience, which can make for some quirky reading (``that old cliche anchored in my subconscious: `anyone can become a coachman, but when it comes to driving, only those in Vienna can' '') and New World readers may also find the author overgenerous in his explications of the Old World Anabaptist past. But these are minor flaws. For the most part Langin is a respectful guide to Amish religious observance, daily farm life, interactions with outsiders and differences between the various American groups, but he is not without some healthy skepticism about the ignorance and prejudice that are an inevitable part of their seemingly blissful insularity. I bought this book from Amazon several years ago, and unlike many books I buy, I still own it. I found the book compelling because of its well-written style, and the fact that after reading it, my wife and I found ourselves in Grabill, Indiana about a year after the reading, and by just what I could remember, I found places referenced in the story. This probably would not have happened had I not been so enmeshed in the telling. To the best of my knowledge, I have Anabaptist ancestors, so anything well-written about the Ammonites, the Hutterites, the Amish, and other non-secular societies is of a great interest.I even bought a copy of the tome and sent it an Amish Miss I met in Berlin, Ohio, one who seemed amazed that an "Englisher" read books about her people.Happy reading!

Book was so, so...

If you want to learn about Amish People and their Amish ways of life, than this is the book to buy. An Amish person I met who I became friends with informed me about this book that he is the co-author of. Now that we have been friends for awhile, I see that his ways of life are according to what the book says. Extremely interesting book if you want to learn about the Amish People. I find it fascinating. I would definitely recommend it especially because now that my family and I have become friends with the Amish co-author of this book, I see first hand that the book is accurate

I really enjoyed reading of this author's experience being around the Amish people. I was surprised at how many pictures there were since a lot of the Amish do not allow pictures, nor do they have them in their homes. Great book! I would recommend it to anyone interested in the Amish people and how they live.

Over the years I have read close to a dozen books on the Amish and other Old Order Anabaptists groups. "Plain and Amish" is one of the best. Bernd Langin, its author, is a native European who spent a significant amount of time living among the Amish and came to know them intimately. Unlike some books, which are merely descriptive of the Amish lifestyle, and others, which are primarily anecdotal, Langin's book, as the subtitle indicates ("An Alternative to Modern Pessimism") is an attempt to show how Amish culture provides a positive antidote to much of what is amiss in modern society. Moreover, although the book provides an overall positive assessment of Amish culture, it is also realistic in the assessment. Langin is not unaware of the problems within Amish society, and he deals with these as well. This work is definitely worth the five stars that I have given it.

I bought this book probably 8 years ago in Arthur, IL in a Mennonite Music/Bookstore. If has been very informative and entertaining. About once a year, I read it again (I'm 1/2 way through it now). The only bad thing about the book is the binding on my copy. The color pictures near the back tend to come out after time. I don't know how to keep the from falling out, but I just make sure I don't lose them. It can also be a little confusing at times to read. The book was originally published in German then translated into English. I think this accounts for the hard reading at times (but not very often). The chapter on anabaptist history is fascinating. The author had access to public records in Germany, and he has a personal knowledge of the regions these particular Amish came from. I've read many books on the Amish. Almost all of them include a short history, but this is the most interesting by far. Also, the author lived with the Amish for a time. He ate with them, went to their church services and weddings, and helped them on the farm. He knows them probably better than any outsider does. He doesn't know the Amish on an academic level, he knows them personally. They have opened up their lives to him, and he did them justice with this book.In short, if you are interested in getting to know a little more about the Amish, whether this is your first or hundredth book on them, you have to get this book. It will give you more knowledge and information than most of the other books combined.
