Michele Landrum, RN, is an Associate Degree Registered Nurse with six years of travel nursing experience across the US, including Alaska. Her experience has focused predominantly in cardiac-related positions, including Cardiac Cath and EP labs, ER, ICU and SICU environments. Since 2005, Michele has worked in a multi-physician cardiology clinic in Mobile, Alabama, conducting physical assessments, CT scans, EKGs, GXT testing, and Patient Education. She also conducts assessments of applicant for the LTC insurance company, Life Plans Inc. of Waltham, MA. Michele is certified in BLS, ACLS, and IABP insertion.

The book doesn't have the information I was looking for. I wanted a quick reference that I could read and review (important values etc). This was more of a book for someone that needs basic information about nursing with a few tips. I wanted to return it but could not get to the UPS store in time. Wish I could have used that money for something I could have found more useful. Def not for a nurse wanting to transition into ICU/CCU
I was hoping this book would follow the lines of "Fast Facts for the ER Nurse", which gives a very brief overview of Causes, Signs and Symptoms, and Interventions for many diseases. I wanted something that would oh so QUICKLY give me a 10-second memory jog if I had a patient that was diagnosed with something I don't deal with often. However, "Fast Facts for the Critical Care Nurse" is not that kind of book. This book dedicates one whole section to preparing a sterile field, but I was unable to find any information on things like interventions for alcohol withdrawal or what the appropriate time frame is for proning a person with ARDS. Overall, I would recommend this book only as a general study guide for students just starting their critical care rotations, or nurses transferring from a lower-acuity unit to critical care if you have no experience with things like mechanical ventilators. I have yet to find a critical care clinical manual that contains CONCISE explanations, but if you have lots of time to study a mini-textbook between patient care, I would recommend the following: Manual of Critical Care Nursing: Nursing Interventions and Collaborative Management, 6e (Baird, Manual of Critical Care Nursing).
More basic stuff you may have already learned in nursing school. A few good chapters but not too much ICU information if you ask me. Still a decent reference if needed.

Condition better than described, fast delivery
Looking back over a 20-yr ICU career, and especially focusing on the question "what resources would have helped me the most in those crucial first 2 years of my career" - this book would have been a waste of both my time and money. For starters, It is much to "wordy" to be a "Fast Facts" reference. While a lot of the info might be helpful to the med-surg or telemetry RN thinking about transferring to the ICU, there is little that wouldn't have been drilled into the new-ICU nurse's head during their prep classes and orientation. I like the "Fast Facts" series in general, but IMHO this unfortunately misses the mark.
DO NOT CONFUSE WITH KATHY WHITE’S “FAST FACTS FOR CRITICAL CARE!†Only found two pages useful: the list of cardiac nursing interventions. The entire book is not fast. It is more basic than nutshell. White is an MSN RN. But this author—although experienced with 6 years of nursing—is unskilled in academic writing. The interventions aren't backed by references and may be outdated. This book convinces me that ICU nursing is not conducive to “nutshell†guidebooks.
