In professional stock car racing, the crew chief is an overlooked, yet tremendously important part of the team. Much of what happens on the track can depend on a split-second decision of the person watching from atop his pit box. In "Leading The Way," former Hendrick Motorsports crew chief Steve Letarte offers an intimate look at one of the most challenging phases of his career, and how he dealt with the pressure of working with not just one, but two of the sport's most popular drivers. After working his way up the ladder at one of NASCAR's top teams, Letarte led the crew with Hall of Fame driver Jeff Gordon, but faced a setback after a devastating championship loss in 2007. Letarte pulls no punches on his shortcomings and failures, but also never loses his strong positive attitude that really fuels the story. You get an incredible understanding of the demands put on a NASCAR crew chief, the constant desire to keep improving, to build on each moment and each race, and also the need to be strong mentally. The level of insight really surprised me - especially since it's a relatively short book. Nate Ryan, himself an experienced journalist for NBC, must also be credited here for his work helping arrange these thoughts into a comprehensive narrative.Letarte also offers an intimate account of Dale Earnhardt, Jr., the sport's most popular driver. He boils away a lot of the artifice so we get to know Earnhardt as a person here, not just the driver. The book does a good job of showing how their relationship progressed. Right from the start, you understand why team owner Rick Hendrick put the two together - both found themselves facing similar challenges in their careers, and realized they needed to work together to overcome them. You end up having to remind yourself that all this took place under some of the greatest scrutiny in the sport as others, myself included, speculated about whether Earnhardt would win again, or if Letarte was the right pick. In the end, they were a good match, and it makes you understand the rapport Earnhardt and Letarte still have in the booth today as commentators for NBC Sports.I have to add that, after reading this book, I lent it to a friend who was looking for some reading material to pass the time. She never followed racing, but ended up reading the whole thing in one sitting, and really enjoyed it. I would be remiss not to bring this up here, as I feel this really speaks to how Letarte's challenges, and how they were overcome, transcend the sport. You don't have to be into racing to understand the lessons learned or gain inspiration from them.

Steve Letarte's book is a very insightful account of his time as the crew chief for NASCAR driver and future hall of famer Dale Earnhardt, Jr. The book is well-written with the help of columnist Nate Ryan. Steve talks about how Dale and he were first partnered by their then employer Rick Hendrick. There are some very poignant moments that Steve recalls that will bring a tear to your eye. It's a quick read and can be done in one sitting. In addition to Steve's and Nate's words, there are photos scattered throughout the book.I recommend this book to anyone but especially if you're a fan of NASCAR, Steve Letarte, or Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

This in-depth look at life as crew chief for two of NASCAR’s biggest stars gives readers a unique feel for what it’s like to manage a race team and develop a true working relationship with a driver. Letarte and Ryan crafted the story well, inserting quite a few tidbits of info that were previously unknown — even to the most ardent Dale Jr. fan.

I am not much of a reader, but I am a NASCAR fan and was interested in the story that Steve had to tell. This book was an easy read, short chapters and such a wonderful story about Steve, his career, relationship with Dale Jr and their career together at Hendrick Motorsports. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Great read. Amazing insights into personalities and a " view from the pit box." Very interesting and would strongly recommend this to anyone interested in racing and human insight.

I'm not a big reader. Well I might actually be a bit big, but I don't read books very often. I wasn't exactly sure what Steve would offer in this book, but I found it to be one of the best books I've ever read. I picked up on some very good ideas and philosophies from the book that will help me in my profession and beyond.Oh by the way, if you are part of Jr. Nation, you'll love the book anyways!

The book was a easy reading book. I read it in a day. Great insight of when Steve Letarte became JR's crew chief. I recommend this book to all of JR's fans. Great book to have!

I'm glad I happened to stumble upon this book. I have always been a Earnhardt fan, Sr. and Jr. Anyway this is a great prequel to Dale Jr's new book that will be out mid October with even more behind the scene story.
