I wasn't sure what to expect when I purchased this book, but when I received it, I fell in love! It really is everything I want to know about eggs. It looks and feels like a little encyclopedia, which I love. The whole idea is just adorable. Perhaps my favorite part about the book is how there are pictures of egg dishes from all around the world and their corresponding recipes. I even found the recipe for "Taiwanese Oyster Omelet," one of my favorite childhood dishes. Awesome! Flipping through the pages, it blows my mind to see how many recipes there are- simply centered around eggs- and I really am eggcited to try them all out. Really glad I made this purchase!
I'm a huge fan of the two Lucky Peach cookbooks edited by Peter Meehan, and thought (mistakenly) that this would follow the same "cut to the chase" rationale of cooking eggs in its many guises, with time-tested shortcuts and frank advice, which is very helpful to a ham-handed cook such as me. This book, however, takes the exact opposite approach, offering a lot of "as told to" storytelling and reminiscence-filled introductions, sprinkled with cultural, linguistic, and etymological factoids from whence the recipe came -- which is all fine if you want to read a definition and examine its sources -- but then proceeds attempts to dash through the recipe (including all of its components, like whipping up a batch of homemade salsas, gravies, and sauces) in condensed (and densely written) sequence. The experience might be different for those who've spent years cooking eggs, and wants to know the many exotic destinations their established skills can be taken, but when I use this cookbook it will be purely as a reference, to identify an interesting egg-based recipe, then track down a recipe (or the accompanying condiment's recipe) that's more user-friendly.
I am so sad that this is Lucky Peach's last book, but I am so glad it's about eggs. It was released just as I had gotten a new flock of backyard chickens, so I had a LOT of extra eggs. I really loved learning about different types of eggs (I'm a hoarder of facts and information), as well as the recipes. So many were unlike anything I would have ever thought of! I appreciated that many variations were tested before the authors published their favorite.
Ya gotta love a cookbook who's egg benedict recipe includes the recipe for the english muffin! This is the best cookbook I've gotten in a loooong time.
I was a huge fan of Lucky Peach, so I was delighted when this book was published. I love browsing all the ways to cook the most basic of ingredients, and feel like my culinary repertoire has benefitted greatly from reimagining the egg.
This is just a delightful book. So many of the recipes and vignettes make me smile. I want to cook my way through the whole book, which for most of the recipes, won't be too daunting a task. I can see several of the recipes entering permanent rotation in our house. I already loved eggs, but this has made me a lifelong devotee.
Neat book about eggs. Follows Lucky Peach formula, and like the magazine, has interesting facts and recipes with one of my favorite things: eggs!
Great book! really everything you want to know about eggs! I bought as an Easter gift for my husband.
