Charles Benjamin Schudson is a former trial and appellate judge, law professor, and Fulbright scholar. As an expert on the American judicial system, he has appeared on PBS, NPR, and Oprah and before the National Association of State Judicial Educators, the United States Conference of Mayors, the Senate Judiciary Committee, and many law schools. He is the president of Keynote Seminars and the coauthor of the book On Trial: America's Courts and Their Treatment of Sexually Abused Children.

Clearly outlines the state judiciary system for those of us that have forgotten and have not had any interaction with the processes. Describes what has gone awry with the politicizing of the election of judges and how that is affecting the way our courts are run. Luckily it also spells out how this can be corrected.

I read Judge Schudson’s book because I know him and I consider his wife, Karen, one of my dearest friends. I was expecting a scholarly treatise that I probably wouldn’t understand, having had no experience with the judicial system. Instead, I found an interesting and engaging story, very well written, that was personal and thoughtful. In the process, I learned many things about the judicial system that I was unaware of. Judge Schudson does a great job in educating the average citizen about the court system and how it works. It causes one to ponder the gravity of the many decisions handed down every day…and hope for the best. Betty Holt

Judge Schudson's perspective on the political forces that influence the judiciary are powerful and insightful. The book is written not just for legal scholars and practitioners, but for everyone who has an interest in the courts and their role in our democracy. It really captures the essence of what it's like to have ultimate responsibility for the lives and well being of others on a day to day basis. I couldn't put it down. It's exciting, genuine and so clearly timely.

While a scientist, not a jurist, I was motivated to read this book by the key intriguing topic it addresses: Has the installation of judges via popular election, rather than by merit-based appointment, corrupted judicial independence? With lucidity, humor, and humility, Judge Schudson gently walks the reader through the case study evidence. His eloquent “summary argument” regarding the demise of judicial independence is both compelling and troubling.

A quite personal account and observations, yet set within a thoughtful, academic treatment. Judge Schudson brings to the reader an understanding of the influences impacting judicial decision-making.
